Emergency Medicine: Toxicology
Medical toxicology is a medical sub-specialty focused on the
prevention and treatment of injury and illness from accidental or
intentional toxic exposure to drugs, chemicals, poisons, and other
harmful environmental agents.
Leading the Region
All BayCare Clinic emergency physicians are trained to handle
toxicology issues and will provide a rapid medical response to
poisoning and drug-related issues. As part of our ongoing
commitment to provide the best medical care possible, the BayCare
Clinic emergency medical team also hosts the region's only
toxicology expert, Dr. Jane Witman.
Our emergency room physicians are specifically trained to handle
the spectrum of emergency medical care. To supplement that
expertise, Dr. Witman brings an additional specialty in adverse
drug reactions. She is certified by both the American Board
of Emergency Medicine and the American Board of Emergency Medicine
- Medical Toxicology.

Medical toxicology experts focus on personal health issues

- Venomous bites and stings
- Anthrax
In addition, medical toxicologists are knowledgeable and can be
instrumental in formulating public policy and practice related to
community issues such as:
