Ankle arthritis can be a debilitating condition, often caused by previous injuries or inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. In a recent Field House Friday segment on FOX 11, Dr. Scharer, a foot and ankle surgeon at Aurora BayCare Medical Center, discussed how this condition impacts patients and the treatment options available.
“Pain, swelling, and difficulty walking are common early symptoms,” Dr. Scharer explained. For patients with severe arthritis who haven’t found relief through injections, bracing, or physical therapy, ankle reconstruction—particularly ankle replacement—can be life-changing.
This procedure involves removing the damaged joint and replacing it with synthetic components to restore motion and reduce pain. Recovery typically includes limited weight-bearing for four weeks, followed by time in a boot and physical therapy.
Aurora BayCare’s orthopedic team is committed to helping patients regain mobility and improve their quality of life.
